Freckles arrived within the hour. She huddled in a ball in the corner of her cage. Her nose twitched in a rapid blur, as it explored the perplexing smells of her new habitat. Her ears shifted direction at each sound intruding into her air space. I’m sure she must have been frightened by the ride home and the strange surroundings. I opened her cage door, set down a bowl of alfalfa pellets, and, speaking in my most soothing voice, held out a carrot.
