A Hearty Hello

Deb:

The doorbell rang and before I could get to the entryway, my youngest son opened the door and peeked around the opening. "Hi!" he said.

Scrambles jumped to his feet, barking like crazy. He leaped to the floor, rushed to the door, and flew into my son's arms.

"Hello to you, boy! Are you ready to go home?"

The Other Guy

Freckles:
As soon as I turned around to try to figure out what was making the noise on the hill, there was another sound I needed to check out. Music played and then a large creature came into the clearing through the portal. It was Other Guy!
There is Nice Guy, Big Guy, The High-Voiced One, and then there is the Other Guy. He's the one who brought that terrible alien creature into my world. Oh, please, please, please don't let him bring another alien creature! One is more than I can stand!

A Surprising Sound

Deb:

Freckles was so busy muching away at her food I don't think she even noticed Scrambles under the blanket on the couch. She finished eating and then jumped, turning completely around. The sound that startled her was Scrambles producing a wide-mouthed yawn, having finally decided that it was time to get up.

As Scrambles wiggled out from beneath the afghan, he stood and stared at me. I knew exactly what he wanted, so I decided I'd get up from my chair and see what we had for breakfast.

That's when the three of us -- Freckles, Scrambles, and I -- heard a sound that made us all jump to our feet in surprise.

The Hills are Alive!

Freckles:

I searched the area, but didn't see any sign of that alien, so I hopped across the clearing. A platter of yummy goodness had been placed by my tree and I dove in with enthusiasm.

I'd almost finished the meal when I sensed something happening behind me. I jumped around. Nothing there! But, I had a strange feeling that something or someone was watching me.

I tipped my ear forward to try to hear anything unusual. All was silent. But, then off in the distance, I heard it. It sounded like a giant yawn. And it was coming from the top of the hills! There was someone up there. I just knew it!

The Hideaway Dog

Deb:

No matter how many great sleeping places we prepared for Scrambles, he always chose the blanket on the couch. It is a crocheted afghan with lots of wonderfully spaced breathing holes. Scrambles would wiggle himself underneath it and completely disappear. The first morning I discovered this, I thought I had lost him. I didn’t see him anywhere, so I called his name.

Now, every other dog we’ve had, would come running to us when we ventured into the kitchen in the morning eager for a walk and food. Not Scrambles. He loves to sleep late. He usually covers himself so completely that you only see a large lumpy blanket. As he rouses, the blanket moves and then his parts (usually nose and bottom) appear in stages from underneath it. But he doesn’t awaken easily. He takes his sweet time, peeking out from beneath the cover and climbing back underneath until he's pretty sure that food is prepared and waiting.

Is the Alien Gone?

Freckles:

After a pleasant night's sleep in my Home Place, I woke to the singing of birds outside my wall. I stretched my paws, tail, and ears, alert to any sounds of danger. Early morning is usually quiet in my land, but ever since that alien landed, I’ve taken nothing for granted. I heard nothing unusual, so I stuck my head out the portal. The silence of the tunnel gave me the courage to hop its length to the Other World. I had left the alien here the night before, so I searched the area to see if he was lurking around one of the bushes.

He wasn't loitering in my cave.
He wasn't skulking under the tree.
He wasn't lying in wait by the portal.

Great! No sign of him. Maybe he'd finally left for his home planet.

That Dog Will Eat Anything!

Deb:

I’d told my husband to bring out a carrot for Scrambles even though I didn’t really think he’d eat it. I figured the bok choy was just a fluke. What I hadn’t taken into consideration is Scrambles’ love of sticks. Whenever we take him for a walk, the first thing he does is search for sticks. Small sticks, large sticks, sticks with leaves attached, sticks with moss attached, sticks with more sticks attached – he loves them all! And, if we don’t stop him at the door, he will bring the stick into the house and chew it to pieces with the result that we soon have tiny stick pieces covering the floor. (Ever tried to pick splinters out of the carpet? It’s no fun!)

I guess Scrambles thought that the carrot was just another stick. Because he grabbed it out of my husband’s hand and chewed contentedly. Only this time he didn’t leave miniscule carrot splinters in the carpet – nope, not at all. The silly dog ate the entire carrot!

What Scrambles Did with the Carrot

Freckles:

The sound I'd heard first was Big Guy getting me a luscious orange stick! He leaned over and held it in front of me. With a flick of my feet and a toss of my head, I snatched that carrot from his paw and hopped away with it. Ah Ha! I’d beaten that alien creature to the treat. I was the victor!

As I chewed away at my prize I noticed out of the corner of my eye that the alien jumped from his perch in the bush and headed for the portal. There in the portal stood Big Guy – with another luscious orange stick in his paw. Before my very eyes he leaned down and held out the stick to the alien! AND the alien took it, placed it on the floor in front of him, and STARTED EATING IT!

NOT Ignorification

Freckles and Deb:

We just wanted to assure everyone that we were NOT practicing ignorification of you this past week! (Freckles is so good at ignoring, she needs no practice!)

Last week was Spring Break and Deb got involved in things other than the blog during the week. But, they were good things and she got a lot of stuff done that she had never planned to do to begin with and didn’t get all the things done that she had planned!

The week went by way too fast! So, today Deb is back at work and Freckles is busy relaxing and resting up from her schedule of napping being messed up by all of Deb’s activities. We will be back tomorrow to continue our story with an episode called “What Scrambles Did with the Carrot!”
